Hoot-E's Hints for Working from Home

Over the next few weeks, Hoot-E will be providing helpful hints and tricks for working from home. Today’s hint is about remaining secure and compliant while working in a remote environment.

While working from home you MUST remember: data security and privacy still apply. Regulations, rules and laws still apply to financial institutions, regardless of where their employees are operating. Federal laws like Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), Gramm–Leach–Bliley Act (GLBA), and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) still apply. Network rules such as Payment Card Industry (PCI) and ACH Data Security rules still apply. State laws such as California’s Consumer Privacy Act still apply.

Agencies like the Federal Trade Commission and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau still expect you to make the protection of personally identifiable Information a top priority! Ensure that your staff can send any emails with account information or social security numbers through a secure channel.

Also, remind staff of things they may take for granted within the four walls of the financial institution. Properly shred documents and lock up data such as check stock, and do not let documents sit on home printers where family members can easily access them.
